LOCAL INSIGHTS - Chiba Prefecture
On the eastern edge of Tokyo Bay lies saw-like Mount Nokogiri. Known as Nokogiri-yama in Japanese, which means “saw mountain,” it has attracted explorers and stone carvers throughout history. This beloved sightseeing spot offers breathtaking coastal views and is popular for day trips from both Chiba and greater Tokyo.
Centuries of mining have accentuated the mountain’s unique profile, transforming it into a remarkable lookout point. Visitors can explore the monuments and learn about the quarrying techniques used to extract the prized Boshu stone. A cable car and hiking trails provide access to the summit, where two magnificent Buddhist monuments await. The Hyaku-shaku Kannon, intricately carved into a sheer rock face, and the Nihonji Daibutsu, the largest sitting stone Buddha in Japan, are awe-inspiring sights.
On clear days, the summit offers a stunning view of Mount Fuji, further enhancing the natural grandeur of the experience. With its proximity to Tokyo and its mix of natural beauty and cultural treasures, Mount Nokogiri is a must-visit destination.
