LOCAL INSIGHTS - Yokohama
Only 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo, Yokohama has many attractive features with a harmonized, sophisticated beauty that fascinates visitors. These include a group of historic buildings that remind Japanese of the pivotal 1800s, a beautiful port where many vessels visit, parks designed and arranged to blend in with the townscape, and one of the largest Chinatowns in the world.
Spring is an ideal time to visit Yokohama, and a visit to Sankeien Garden is a must as it is a great spot to see cherry blossoms and experience Japanese culture.
Sankeien is a traditional Japanese garden that formerly formed part of the residence of Sankei Hara, a businessman who made his fortune in the raw silk trade. He opened it to the public in 1906, saying, “This beautiful scenery is not private property. It belongs to everyone.”
In this garden, historic structures, including 10 important cultural properties that were relocated from Kyoto, Kamakura and elsewhere, are cleverly arranged. The garden offers beautiful scenes that change from season to season. When they are in bloom, the cherry trees are illuminated at night.
